OBi110: How to use POTS if VoIP or internet is down

July 24, 2012
Many users of the OBi110 route local calls via POTS, and use VoIP for long distance. But what if your internet service is not working, or your VoIP provider's equipment is down? Fortunately, the OBi110's Trunk Groups feature will allow you to configure the OBi110 to try different routes in a priority fashion. For this example, let's assume our VoIP provider is configured on sp1. This technique may be used with any combination of service providers or the LINE Port. 1) Ensure that the DigitMap for both sp1 and li contain a sequence that matches the number you wish to dial. 2) Voice Services >> Gateways and Trunk Groups: (pick any Trunk Group; we'll use tg1)
TrunkList: sp1,li DigitMap: ((Msp1)|(Mli))
3) Physical Interfaces >> PHONE Port:
OutboundCallRoute: {(Mtg1):tg1},{(Mli):li}
With this configuration, the device will attempt to route calls that match both sp1's and li's DigitMap via sp1, or li if sp1 fails. If a dialed number does not match sp1's DigitMap but does match li, the call will be routed via li. When testing this, we discovered it performed as expected when we unplugged the OBi110 from our router, when the service provider was unreachable, and when the service provider was reachable, but rejected the call. Note: This technique can have undesirable results. If (based on this example) sp1 permanently goes down, all calls that match both DigitMaps will be routed via li without notification to you. This could result in unexpected long distance charges.
